Professor Nikos Tzanakis is Associate Professor in Pneumonolgy. He qualified (1982) at National and Kapodistrian University of Athens University and as specialist in Pneumonology at Sophia Schliemann – Sotiria Pneumonology Hospital in Athens (1983-1988). He moved in Heraklion, Crete as Registrar in Pneumonology at Venizelion General Hospital (1988-Aug 1999). He undertook research at Medical School, University of Crete and was awarded a PhD in 1993. He spent a sabbatical year (1996-1997) at the Pulmonology and Epidemiology Departments, in University of Groningen, The Netherlands doing research and returned to a consultant post in University Hospital of Heraklion, Crete (1997-2000). He was elected as Assistant Professor in Clinical Epidemiology at Medical School, University of Crete in 2000 and became Associate Professor since 2011. Since 2000 he was appointed as consultant in respiratory medicine at Dept of Thoracic Medicine, University Hospital of Heraklion. He now works at the department of Pneumonology, in University Hospital and in Dept of Internal Medicine in Medical School with 10 research workers and 30 Postdoc students. Professor Tzanakis has published more than 150 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has written chapters in 13 books or series on respiratory diseases. His paper’s total impact factor is more than 570 and his research work has been cited more than three thousand times (3501). His h-index is 32. He is member of the international societies ATS and ERS, and serves 10 journals as reviewer. His research is particularly concerned with epidemiology, pathophysiology and management of chronic obstructive lung diseases. He was the chairman of COPD working group of Hellenic Respiratory Society with more than 100 members for 6 years (2006-2011) and from 2014 – today as well as national leader of ERS COPD-audit project.
